It all began in 1891 when a handful of devoted Episcopalians in East Hamburg (now Orchard Park) came together with a shared vision. A year later, the congregation's dream took root when they purchased a plot of land on the northeast end of Potter Avenue for a mere $175. It was on Easter Sunday that this humble church conducted its very first service, marking the beginning of an incredible journey.
Growth and Evolution
Over the next 30 years, St. Mark's experienced numerous changes and expansions. In 1900, a guild hall and kitchen were added, nurturing both the congregation's spiritual and communal life. In 1914, a new bell was funded, which rang out for the first time on Easter Sunday, symbolizing the ever-present call to faith.
Then, in 1924, a pivotal decision was made to move the church to its current location at the southwest corner of Potter Avenue. This move was not without controversy, but it ultimately laid the foundation for the church's enduring presence. The once simple frame building now boasted a red brick veneer, a testament to the community's dedication.
Following World War II, St. Mark's transformed from a mission church into a fully-fledged parish. The community was growing rapidly, fueled by the housing expansion in Orchard Park. With more to welcome, an expansion became necessary, and in due course, the church saw the addition of a new vestibule, side aisle, chancel, and sanctuary. This increased the seating capacity from 107 to 254 persons, enabling more members to partake in the joyous celebrations of faith.
Continued Expansion and Community Involvement
Over the years, St. Mark's continued to adapt and grow, responding to the evolving needs of its congregation. In 1966, another expansion was initiated, creating space for the Sunday School, meeting rooms, the Rector's study, and the Vestry Room. In 1973, a specially designed organ was installed, adding a harmonious dimension to the church's worship experience.
